Teacher of the Year


GCAGS $1,000 Award for Excellence in the
Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth

Required Materials

  1. Cover sheet (use online nomination form or MS Word document posted below)
  2. Teacher's philosophy of teaching (summarized in paragraph form)*
  3. Description of teaching units (summarized in paragraph form)*
  4. Letter of recommendation from colleague*
  5. Letter of recommendation from administrator*

*Include this information/attach documents to online nomination form OR mail all documentation to Chairperson

Note: All required materials must be submitted.

Award Requirements

  1. Three years full-time teaching experience
  2. Teaches at least one unit per year on natural resources
  3. Unit fits definition of natural resources as stated in application Note: All requirements must be met.

Content Guidelines

  1. Teaching should include: scientific study of these resources; origin of resources; discovery of resource; extraction of resource; historic use and present use; conservation of resources; preservation of the environment; reclamation; use of earth science knowledge in informed decision making
  2. Unit will be evaluated on: depth and breadth of concepts; creativity of presentation; balanced treatment of information regarding societal need and environmental issues; clarity and accuracy of expression; overall excellence in teaching

Additional Comments

  1. The award will include $500 for use under the teacher's supervision for educational purposes and $500 for personal use by the teacher.
  2. To forward a GCAGS Teacher of the Year to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists same Award for $5,000, with AAPG focus on energy resources development, teachers who include subjects in this area should receive their special consideration.
  3. In concert with the 1966 National Science Education Standards a teacher's use of the inquiry approach in teaching should be given extra consideration.
